The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America is a national organization with members from 42 states and the District of Columbia. The members are descendants of more than 10,000 men and women who served the American colonies before July 5, 1776. United by a commitment to our great country, the organization focuses on preserving and promoting the nation’s history for future generations.
Our Three Initiatives
Education
Our mission is to honor our national history while building a future that continues this tradition. We provide grants and scholarships to support students and professionals in upholding patriotism and optimism in the American experiment. Through the Congressional Essay Contest for high school students, the American Heritage Award and the American History Scholarships, the Tennessee Dames continue to celebrate the NSCDA ideals with our local communities.
Historic and Patriotic Activities
The principles of civic engagement are closely aligned with the NSCDA mission to promote an understanding of America’s history. Our dedication stems from the perspective that comprehensive knowledge requires an awareness of foundational origins. Whether facilitating the naturalization process for immigrants or disseminating information about the nation’s flag, we strive to provide all citizens with opportunities to learn about the United States and contribute meaningfully to its ongoing narrative.
Active-duty service members and veterans make significant sacrifices to safeguard our nation and its freedoms. The NSCDA is privileged to engage in initiatives that offer support and share the experiences of military personnel. In Tennessee, the Dames support Valentines for Vets, Wreaths across America, Vet Dogs, and the Veterans History Project through the Library of Congress.

Preservation
The NSCDA has been a leader in the field of historic preservation, restoration, and the interpretation of historic sites since 1897. Through our ongoing efforts in historic preservation, we are ensuring that the varied narratives of individuals, locations, and historical events from our nation’s past contribute meaningfully to shaping its future. The NSCDA-TN’s own Travellers Rest is a testament to the success of our statewide efforts. Through Great American Treasures, where our historic sites tell the stories of how America became America, the NSCDA continues to lead in the field of historic preservation.
